At Home Ice Cream (No Ice Cream Maker Required!)

Today the weather was beautiful, so I was in the mood for a summer treat. I found this recipe on food.com and had to do it! I have used this recipe previously in a high school science class so it brought back memories! This is a great project for kids on a hot summer day or for every day!

You will need:

  • 1/2 cup half and half
  • 1 tbs sugar
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 1 sandwhich ziplock bag
  • 1 gallon ziplock bag
  • 3 cups of crushed ice
  • 3 cups of rock salt
  • (if you want a chocolate or strawberry flavor, use syrup)
First, place the half-and-half, sugar, vanilla, and any flavored syrup into the first ziplock bag. Make sure this is sealed tightly.
Next, place the ice and rock salt in the larger bag, placing the small bag inside this bag. Also make sure this bag is sealed tightly.
Shake the bag for ten to fifteen minutes, letting the ice cream harden.
Finally, take out the smaller bag and enjoy your homemade ice cream!
