Harry Potter Fashion

In honor of the last Harry Potter movie, which I am also using as the ending point of my childhood, I will be creating looks from the Harry Potter books series. In Harry Potter there are four houses, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Each of these houses has its own colors and symbols that I will base looks off of. So if you are headed to a Harry Potter themed movie or a midnight showing of the last movie (like I am) try one of these looks on for size.

Each look has basic school uniform items. For girls, I recommend a sweater in the house’s color instead of a sweater vest and tie. I used shorts for these outfits because finding a grey pleated skirt was proving very difficult. Te blazer can be replaced with a cloak or a peacoat and flats with other black shoes.

First there is Gryffindor. If you are a Gryffindor, and you would follow the saying: “You might belong in Gryffindor, where dwell the brave at heart, their daring, nerve, and chivalry, set Gryffindors apart.” Their colors are burgundy and gold and their symbol is the lion.

Next there is Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff’s saying goes, “You may belong in Hufflepuff, where they are just and loyal, those patient Hufflepuffs are true, and unafraid of toil.” Their colors are yellow and black and their symbol is a badger.

Third there is Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw’s saying states, “Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, If you’ve a ready mind, where those of wit and learning, will always find their kind.” Their colors are blue and bronze and their symbol is an eagle.

Finally there is Slytherin. Slytherin’s saying goes, “Or perhaps in Slytherin, you’ll make your real friends, those cunning folk use any means, to achieve their ends.” Their colors are dark green and silver and their symbol is a snake.

Basically the looks all have the same key elements of a school uniform which can usually be found in most people’s closets. The only difference is the key color pieces and the accessories pertaining to the houses.

What to Wear to a Wedding

There are three basic types of wedding venues, an outdoor wedding, a beach wedding, and a church wedding. Below you will find looks for each! I’m just going to give looks for summer, maybe i’ll redo this list in the fall!

First, the outdoor wedding. I like to stick to bright colors in the summer and bold floral designs are also good. Depending on the time of day will determine the material your dress will be made of, if a morning/afternoon wedding cotton is fine but a late afternoon/night wedding requires a richer (or shinier) material.

Dress: Leifsdottir, $298, bloomingdales.com

Shoes: Guess, $90, bloomingdales.com

Bracelet: R J Graziano, $55, bloomingdales.com

Earrings: Forever 21, $4.80

Eyes: Bare Escentuals, Smoky “V” Eye

Lips: Bobbi Brown, $22, bloomingdales.com

Next is a beach wedding which requires a light flowy dress. Here I wouldn’t wear a a dark color, a bright color is okay but black is inappropriate on a beach. Whether you have a destination wedding or a small wedding on the Jersey Shore, this look is the way to go.

Dress: Donna Morgan, $158, nordstrom.com

Shoes: Forever 21, $17

Ring: Forever 21, $4.80

Necklace: Forever 21, $8.80

Clutch: Nordstrom, $78

Lips: Clinique, $14

Eyes: Bare Escentuals, $13

Finally is the church wedding. At a church wedding you need to cover up slightly and will most likely have a more formal reception. This is a look that transforms from church to night with no switch of accessories.

Dress: David Meister, $168, nordstrom.com

Shoes: Forever 21, $23

Bracelet: Claires, $9.50

Earrings: Carolee, $45, bloomingdales.com

Eyes: Benefit, $32, bloomingdales.com

Lips: Estee Lauder, $24, bloomingdales.com

Any of these looks will make a great summer look for a wedding. Now just do your best to stay on that open bar and avoid punching your aunt in the face for hysterically crying over the wedding vows, and don’t fall in those heels. Happy Shopping!

Ten Ways to Build your College Wardrobe Over the Summer

There are key items that every college girl needs and some of them you may have never had before. From an actual girl in college who survived her first rainy semester without rain boots listen to this advice.

1. A pair of wear every day jeans

Forever 21 $10.95

They don’t have to be expensive. My absolute favorite jeans are from Forever 21 and they are ten dollars. I wear them almost everyday. I’d go with a dark wash which you can wear with anything. I also like skinny jeans, but boot cuts are great too.

2. A sports bra or two

Dicks Sporting Goods $28

Even if you won’t be playing a college sport, a sports bra is necessary. One painful year of zumba with an underwire taught me that lesson. But they can also be great for lounging days.

3. Rain boots

Zappos.com $125

I cannot stress how important rain boots are. Through high school I never owned rain boots, but in college I don’t see a girl without them on when it is raining. You will be walking around campus a lot even if you go to large school where they have buses or are a commuter. Believe me, somehow it is different than high school.

4. Black dress pants

NY & Company $42.95

There will be important events where you will need black pants. Whether it is an internship fair or a meeting with heads of your departments, balck pants will always come in handy.

5. Sweat attire

School Sweatshirt (cost will depend on your school)

Sweatshirts and sweatpants with your schools name on them are a necessity. Whether they are for the hoodie comfort of cramming all night or the baggy sweatpants of coming home from a full day of classes, school sweats are a must.

6. A good book bag

Dicks Sporting Goods $85

I carried around a Jansport book bag for two years that had no padding in the back and the entire bottom was ripped along the material line and when I switched a North Face, I couldn’t believe the difference. Having a sturdy book bag is necessary for carrying everything from laptops to biology textbooks.

7. Cardigans

J. Crew $62

Cardigans are a great way to make a simple tank, jeans, and flip flops feel more structured and polished. I have cardigans in neutral colors right now gray and navy blue, but I am currently searching for a coral, yellow and chocolate brown. Cardigans are versatile and are great in every color.

8. Tights and leggings

American Apparel $28

If you aren’t into leggings that is fine. I, on the other hand, love them and also am really into tights. Now don’t make the mistake I did freshman year. Don’t wear tights as leggings, no one will ever let you live that down. Now tights are what you wear under skirts, I’m really into black and black patterned tights, haven’t ventured into color yet. But leggings are thick and if you find a pair for five dollars don’t buy them! You want your leggings to be thick and soft. You’ll never take them off.

9. Flats

Payless $29.99

I am not the type of girl to wear heels around campus. I think it looks stupid and you look like you are trying too hard. But I do love flats, just like cardigans flats have the ability to dress up any outfit. Right now I have just one pair of black flats but I am also looking for some leopard print ones.

10. Something that is all you

I wear necklaces. I always get compliments on the necklaces that I wear and everyone knows I have a huge necklace collection. My old roommate is a scarf girl, she always has one on. Pick an item that you love and wear it often, but with variation. You don’t want to be the girl that wears the exact same blue sweater everyday, even if you do wash it. You don’t have to change your style just because you are going to college, believe me it will change all on its own.

As you can see this list is a work in progress even for me. College is about turning into the person you are supposed to be so don’t get too caught up on the particulars of this list, you will evolve into your own person. If you get one thing from this list make it be the rain boots. You’ll thank me later.

High-Waisted Skirt

A high-waisted skirt is the newest trend that I love! I had two high-waisted to the knee skirts from the year before, but both were flowy skirts. This year I got a black tight skirt, a black loose skirt, and a flowery skirt which are all to mid-thigh.

Vanessa Hudgens wearing Myne

The important part is to pair the top as a reverse of the bottom. Tight skirt and loose top; loose skirt and tight shirt. If you want to wear tight with tight just make sure you wear an accessory, like a belt or a ruffle on the shirt. You don’t want to have the skin tight look. Loose can also look good if everything is not too loose. The trick is not to look sloppy, this is a look that has some polish to it. I think any shoes work, from flip-flops to fashion sneakers (just not running sneakers).

Print is also important. Mixing prints is good, but if you want to go with basic colors that works too. If you have one bright, use that as the focal point and dress all other pieces down, just as Vanessa Hudgens does in her Myne skirt.

Wearing a jacket or sweater over your high-waisted skirt is also touchy. Pair a loose cardigan with a tighter skirt, and a fitted jacket with a loose skirt. I like a classic black blazer you can find one in almost any store and at any price range. Cardigans are also an important item, somethign every girl should have in her closet and as essential as a pair of sweat pants. I like to add color that coordinates with some part of the shirt or skirt like in a flower petal. That way when I put the cardigan on I look more put together.

Rachel Bilson, unknown designer

To mix prints I would recommend doing it with basic colors unless you are going for a Lady Gaga or eighties look. Greys, navy, blacks, and whites all look great together, such as Rachel Bilson.

Hair is also an important factor in the high-waisted skirt. I like loose hair with a loose skirt and an updo with a tighter skirt. But hair still has to be polished, beach waves are cute, but avoid the frizzy look with a little frizz serum. If doing an updo, use a wax or pomade to keep fly-aways down. A front braid or headband also works.

Accessories are our last stop. My favorite accessory is a necklace. I am obsessed with necklaces and costume jewelry. Bangles also look great nice to a loose skirt. Nylons are also good, patterned or not but with summer approaching bare legs is the way to go. Also a slouchy, oversize purse is better, nobody is into the stiff purses right now.

High-waisted skirts are great outfits. If you try them, you either love them or hate them but I love them. I can already tell they will be my signature summer piece, since they’ve already made their way into my fall and spring clothing!
